Auburn quick hit: Off week good for do-it-all kicker Daniel Carlson
AUBURN, Ala. — Daniel Carlson had a heavy workload in the first two games of Auburn's season.
Winning the punting job in fall camp added to Carlson's other duties, as he also handles the Tigers' placekicking and field goal and extra-point attempts. He went 2-for-3 on field goals and punted five times for 240 yards, good for an average of 48 yards per attempt.
The redshirt freshman also booted 14 kickoffs, with 11 going for touchbacks.
So last week's open date was a perfect opportunity for Carlson to get some rest.
"He’s doing everything, and your leg gets sore after games when you do that much, so it was good for him," Auburn coach Gus Malzahn said during his Monday press conference, adding that Carlson only kicked "a couple times" last week.
Going forward, the Tigers will continue to keep a close watch on Carlson to make sure he doesn't tire himself out.
"We've been smart with his leg," Malzahn said. "It was good for him."
