Georgia assistant coach’s sister found murdered
Georgia outside linebackers coach Kevin Sherrer’s sister, Rasha Sherrer, was found murdered in her Alabama home on Monday.
Police believe the death of Rasha Sherrer, 36, is part of a double homicide. According to AL.com, Rasha Sherrer’s body was found next to Gary “Sambo” Hazelrig, 43, at their residence located about 40 miles north of Birmingham. Police were told the two were last seen alive at 8:30 a.m. on Monday.
During the weekly SEC teleconference, Georgia head coach Mark Richt said Kevin Sherrer will not be present for practice Wednesday and has traveled to Alabama to be with his family.
Richt said he told his assistant to take as much time as he needs.
“We expect Kevin to come back tomorrow. But whatever he needs to do to help and just be there for his family, we want him to do that,” Richt said. “There’s a lot more important things in life than football.”
The Georgia Athletic Association released a statement on Sherrer’s behalf Wednesday afternoon.
“Georgia assistant football coach Kevin Sherrer expresses his appreciation for the thoughts, prayers, and messages of sympathy in the loss of his sister,” the statement reads. “He is also grateful for the respect of the family’s privacy during this time.”
Richt not going anywhere
Steve Spurrier has gotten a lot of attention about how much longer he plans to coach, but what about Georgia coach Mark Richt?
He said he doesn’t know, but he predicts it will be a good while longer.
“I think the older you get the more you realize you’ve still got some juice, you know?” the 55-year-old Richt said. “Coach Spurrier is still doing a great job. I don’t even want to try to predict what’s going to happen down the road. I do enjoy what I do and I want to continue to be influential in the lives of these young men, and also win ballgames for Georgia.”
