Report: Big Ten coach expected to interview with Gamecocks baseball

It’s plenty early in the South Carolina baseball coaching search, but a report from SEC Country’s Mike Wilson identified one coach expected to interview for the position.

Wilson reported Michigan’s Erik Bakich is on track to get an interview to replace Chad Holbrook.

Bakich led the Wolverines to 42 wins and an NCAA Tournament spot this season. He’s been to the tournament twice in the past three seasons, and won a conference tournament in 2015.

Overall, Bakich has gone 176–119 in five years in Ann Arbor, jump starting a program that faltered under Rich Maloney. Before that, Bakich turned around Maryland, which upset the Gamecocks in a regional at Founders Park two years after he left.

Bakich has experience in the Southeast and SEC, after starting his career with Clemson’s staff and spending 2003-2009 as a Vanderbilt assistant.
