This Gamecock is tearing it up in the top summer baseball league in the country

It’s not yet clear where South Carolina baseball’s Noah Campbell will play for the Gamecocks in 2019 — coach Mark Kingston has said he will be evaluated in the middle infield and in the outfield.

But there’s no question that Campbell, a rising sophomore, has the talent and physical gifts to be a major player for USC, and his performance so far in summer ball has to have Kingston and his staff excited about next year.

After 18 games in the Cape Cod League, generally considered the best summer baseball league in the nation, Campbell is hitting .385, with an OPS of 1.074 and two doubles, two triples and three home runs. He is tied for third in the league with 15 RBIs, and his team, the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox, currently sit atop the league standings.

Campbell’s performance earned him a Cape Cod All-Star nod, the league announced Saturday. He is the third Gamecock to receive the honor in the past two years — outfielders Carlos Cortes and Jacob Olson were named to the team last season.

As a true freshman this past season with USC, Campbell hit .270 with three doubles, three triples, three home runs and 13 RBIs in 47 games, 42 of which he started.

With the Gamecocks returning only a few pieces of their Super Regional squad from 2018, Campbell is expected to feature prominently in next year’s starting lineup as a player with starting experience in the program.
