Gamecocks lose young pitcher to transfer portal, pick up pair of commitments

As the post-MLB Draft shuffle continues, South Carolina baseball has lost another player off its 2020 roster — and added a couple pieces for the future.

Right-handed pitcher Trey Tujetsch, a freshman this past season, has entered the transfer portal, The State confirmed Monday, while junior college infielder Michael Robinson announced his commitment to the Gamecocks.

Tujetsch, a Charlotte native, was a two-time all-state selection in high school and ranked 25th in his class in North Carolina, according to Perfect Game. He impressed the USC coaching staff some in fall scrimmages and made four appearances in the spring, throwing 3 1/3 innings and giving up one earned run and three hits against five strikeouts, before the coronavirus pandemic forced the season’s cancellation.

Tujetsch joins fellow freshman Jax Cash and junior Anthony Amicangelo in entering the transfer portal this offseason.

Robinson, meanwhile, comes to the Gamecocks after two years at Walters State Community College. As a freshman, he hit .339 with 52 RBIs in 61 games for a team that went to the Junior College World Series. In his shortened sophomore season, the 6-foot-4 shortstop hit .309 with a .418 on-base percentage.

Robinson will be a junior when he suits up for the Gamecocks in 2021.

In addition to Robinson, South Carolina added some infield help for several years down the road on Monday, with the commitment of class of 2024 prospect George Wolkow.

Wolkow, who has yet to play a high school game, is projected as a third baseman and ranked fifth in his class at that position by Perfect Game. The Downers Grove, Illinois, native, is also ranked as the best 2024 prospect in the state by Perfect Game. He is South Carolina’s first commitment in the class and is already 6-foot-6, 200 pounds.
