Gamecocks’ newest transfer portal addition is power hitter from Southern Miss
The South Carolina baseball team’s offseason of transfer portal additions continues.
Mark Kingston’s Gamecocks on Thursday added a commitment from Southern Miss transfer infielder Will McGillis. He is USC’s ninth pickup from the portal since the season ended.
“My new uniform. Blessed to be a South Carolina Gamecock! #ForeverToThee,” he said in a social media post announcing his decision.
McGillis his .265 with 16 home runs, 12 doubles and 51 RBIs for the Golden Eagles in 2022. Southern Miss’ season ended with a Super Regional loss to eventual national champ Ole Miss.
He started all 66 of the Golden Eagles’ games this season and has played shortstop, first base and second base during his college career.
The 6-foot-3, 208-pound McGillis is originally from San Diego and just wrapped up his junior season at Southern Miss. He was among the team leaders in slugging percentage (.543) and was hit by a pitch a team-high 20 times. He has some speed, too, stealing six bases on nine attempts.
He has a career .245 average to go with 30 home runs and 113 RBIs in 625 at-bats.
The Gamecocks have lost six players to the portal this offseason.
