Weather halts South Carolina-LSU baseball series. Teams will try to finish Saturday
Game 3 of the LSU-South Carolina baseball series will not be played Friday due to inclement weather.
Instead, the game will be played Saturday at noon — if the weather will cooperate.
The No. 1 Tigers and No. 6 Gamecocks were initially scheduled to play a three-day series starting Thursday, but the teams rearranged the schedule to play a Friday doubleheader — because of projected poor weather on Saturday. That forecast is still dicey: The National Weather Service is calling for a 100% chance of rain Saturday and a high near 49.
Due to SEC rules, Saturday is the last day LSU and USC can play. Teams must play three games within a three-day window.
The Tigers and Gamecocks were able to play the first game of Friday’s twinbill, with LSU rallying for five runs in the final two innings to win 8-7, evening the series 1-1.
Powered by two home runs and eight RBIs by star freshman Ethan Petry, USC won the series opener Thursday night 13-5, and the Gamecocks were on the cusp of winning the series before Gavin Dugas tied Friday’s game with a grand slam in the eighth.
The third game of the series was supposed to take place about an hour after Friday’s first game, but the grounds crew put the tarp on the field soon after the game ended, and the coaching staffs conferred multiple times before the third game was postponed
The Gamecocks (28-4, 9-2 SEC) will look to bounce back from their first home loss of the season after starting 19-0 at Founders Park.
