USC Gamecocks Baseball

MLB Draft is over. A look at what Gamecock baseball roster might look like in 2025

South Carolina baseball wasn’t hit too hard Tuesday, the final day of the Major League Baseball draft.

Gamecock signee Carson Messina was the lone player taken in rounds 11-20 on the final day. Messina, the Summerville High standout, was picked in the 13th round by the Toronto Blue Jays.

Messina’s brother Cole was drafted early in the third round on Monday by the Colorado Rockies. Both are expected to sign with their major league clubs.

The Messinas are two of six USC players or signees picked in the three-day draft. Others drafted were signees PJ Morlando (first round) and Brendan Clarke (fifth round), weekend starter Eli Jones (seventh round) and pitcher Garrett Gainey (ninth round). All are expected sign. Gainey is a senior and has no eligibility left.

There are others who could sign free-agent deals instead of returning for final year of school.

With the draft complete, first-year coach Paul Mainieri can now start putting the final touches on next year’s roster. The Gamecocks got a big boost when first baseman Ethan Petry announced he would not transfer. Petry is projected as a first-round draft pick in next year’s draft by multiple publications.

Maineri and his staff have been busy in the transfer portal with commitments already including outfielder Dalton Mashore (St. Mary’s) and infielders Charlie Meglio (Campbell) and Henry Kaczmar (Ohio State). Roster sizes for Division I baseball are at 40 players.

The Gamecocks also got a commitment from Florence-Darlington Tech pitcher Aydin Palmer on Thursday. Palmer, who played at South Florence, was 9-3 with 77 strikeouts in 60 2/3 innings last season for the Stingers, who advanced to the JUCO World Series.
