Roth removed from Cleveland Indians roster
Michael Roth is out of work — at least temporarily. The former Gamecock star was been designated for assignment by the Cleveland Indians.
The Indians have 10 days to trade or release Roth. If no other Major League team claims him and he accepts his assignment, he will officially be added back to the Columbus roster. That’s where all of Roth’s work occurred this season, pitching for the Clippers, Cleveland’s Triple-A affiliate.
Roth said Wednesday night via Twitter: “Vacay!” and “Whenever you get DFA’d you should get a teammate that gets to hang out with you.”
After posting a 26-6 record and 1.91 ERA in four seasons for the Gamecocks while helping the program win a pair of national championships, the 6-foot-1, 210-pound pitcher was selected in the ninth round of the 2012 MLB draft by the Angels.
In 2014, Roth was designated for assignment by the Angels twice. After returning to the organization, Roth elected for free agency in November after being designated the second time. In January, he signed with the Indians.
Roth has a career 2-1 record with a 7.79 ERA in 32 1/3 innings pitched in the majors. He’s appeared in 22 games - including one start. Roth was on Cleveland’s major-league roster for six games but didn’t make an appearance. While pitching for the Clippers, Roth went 7-6 with a 4.15 ERA in 20 appearances — including 19 starts.
He’s regarded as one of the most popular Gamecocks for both his success and outgoing personality.
