South Carolina baseball gets commitment from power-hitter with local ties
South Carolina baseball coach Paul Mainieri has openly talked about the need to add more power hitters to the roster next season.
On Wednesday night, the Gamecocks got such a hitter with local ties.
Former Lexington High standout Patrick Evans committed to South Carolina. Evans is currently a sophomore at Florence-Darlington Tech and will have two years of eligibility left.
Evans, an infielder, is having a breakout season for the Stingers, who won the Region 10 regular season and tournament championship. Florence-Darlington Tech will host the East District championship on May 9-11 with the winner going to the Division I Junior College World Series.
Evans was named the Region 10 Player of the Year after hitting .462 with 10 home runs and 68 RBIs. He also has stolen 16 bases.
Evans’ power could be a boost for USC, which ranks 12th out of 16 teams in the conference in home runs with 47.
With Evans’ commitment, that gives the Gamecocks 11 players in the Class of 2025, but that number is expected to grow over the next months with the transfer portal. Of the 11 commitments, five are from the junior college ranks.
