Here’s a Gamecock first: 2010, 2011 baseball teams going into school’s hall of fame
For the first time in the 59-year history of the University of South Carolina’s Athletic Hall of Fame, an entire team has been selected for induction.
On Tuesday, USC Athletics announced its 2026 Hall of Fame class that included football coach Steve Spurrier, women’s basketball star Tyasha Harris, 11-time All-American swimmer Tomas Peribonio and four other individuals.
Also on the list: The 2010 and 2011 South Carolina baseball teams, which both won national championships.
Those squads were responsible for South Carolina’s first national championships in a major sport, creating the school’s first athletic dynasty that was soon joined by the women’s basketball program.
The 2010 Gamecocks team was the ninth in South Carolina history — and the fourth under coach Ray Tanner — to earn a spot in the College World Series. Highlighted by Michael Roth’s complete game against Clemson and Whit Merrifield’s 10th-inning walk-off to beat UCLA and claim the title, that squad pulled off the rare feat of losing game one in Omaha before winning six straight to lift the trophy.
A year later, the 55-win South Carolina team didn’t lose a single game in the NCAA Tournament and notched a pair of clutch extra-innings victories — against Virginia and Florida — in Omaha to win the first national title in the brand-new TD Ameritrade Park.
