Amid all the speculation that Kevin Schnall will eventually leave Coastal Carolina for the garnet and black in Columbia, Chanticleers Athletic Director Chance Miller projected confidence that his baseball coach isn’t headed anywhere.

“I can tell you this, I’m not planning on Kevin Schnall leaving,” Miller told WBTW News13’s Gianna Forbis on Thursday. “I’m planning on Kevin Schnall being the coach for a long time.”

Forbis, in a social media post, reported Miller as saying he and Schnall met earlier Thursday and “were talking about how they were going to build the roster for next year and get back to Omaha.”

Per a report by The Post and Courier’s David Cloninger, South Carolina talked with Schnall on Wednesday and were set to talk again on Thursday.

“I can’t tell you what Kevin has done or not done,” Miller told Forbis Thursday, “but Kevin is our coach right now. He’s actually over (at the baseball facility) doing exit interviews with all the players.”

Milller, who served as South Carolina’s deputy AD under Ray Tanner for years, is likely accustomed to this situation by now.

Back in October, after Tennessee coach Tony Vitello left for the San Francisco Giants, the Vols were expected to go after Schnall — who was coming off a College World Series Final berth in his first year as the Chants head coach — about possibly coming to the SEC.

It’s unclear whether Schnall was actually offered the job. But it was apparent that, one, the top baseball programs in America thought quite fondly of him and, two, it would be hard to pry him away from Coastal — where he spent two seasons as a catcher (1998-99) and 21 years as an assistant coach.

“They reached out to me to discuss the position,” Schnall said of Tennessee’s interest. “However, this team’s commitment to excellence — and the partnership with Chance Miller — is too strong to consider an opportunity elsewhere right now.”

To his credit, Miller has seen this from both sides. Obviously, as the leader of Coastal Carolina athletics, he’s going to do everything in his power to keep one of the best baseball coaches in America on his staff. But, having spent so long at USC, he understands there are things SEC schools can offer that Coastal can’t match.

“He should be on top of everyone’s list,” Miller said on 107.5 The Game in an April radio interview. “If I was still at South Carolina and I was making that decision, Kevin Schnall would be the first person that I would call. I would make him say no to me.”
