USC’s Alex Destino to miss baseball series finale vs. Vanderbilt
South Carolina left fielder Alex Destino will be out of the lineup until at least next weekend against Tennessee after suffering a sprained left AC joint Friday night at Vanderbilt.
Destino crashed into the wall in left field in the fifth inning while running full speed. He immediately fell to the ground and laid face first on the warning track for several minutes before being helped off the field.
“I was dead sprinting backwards, and with the field being turf I didn’t really know much of a warning track. I caught the ball and looked up and a big sheet of metal was right there,” Destino said after the game. “Luckily I was able to get my head out of the way and take the brunt of the force to my body so that was good.”
Destino was replaced in the lineup for Saturday’s series finale at Vanderbilt by freshman TJ Hopkins. He is also expected to miss Tuesday’s game against Coastal Carolina.
The sophomore is batting .360 on the season with seven doubles, four home runs and 26 RBIs. He currently has a 20-game hitting streak.
