USC’s Gene Cone named SEC Player of the Week after huge weekend
South Carolina outfielder Gene Cone was honored by the SEC and Collegiate Baseball on Monday for his remarkable weekend at the plate in the Gamecocks’ sweep of Missouri.
Cone, a junior from Columbia, was named the SEC Player of the Week. He batted .833 (10-for-12) with seven runs scored and six RBIs in three games against Missouri. His 10 hits were the most in a series by a Gamecocks player in Founders Park history (dating back to 2009).
He also was named National Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball.
Cone capped the weekend going 5-for-5, a homer shy of the cycle and drove in three runs in the 9-2 victory over Missouri as he set a school record with a 27-game hitting streak, surpassing the previous mark of 26 set by Whit Merrifield in the 2009 and 2010 seasons.
Cone’s 27-game hitting streak is the longest active streak in Division I baseball and is two shy of the longest this season by a Division I player.
USC had no midweek games and hosts Florida this weekend.
