USC’s Jonah Bride ejected after hard slide, faces suspension

South Carolina third baseman Jonah Bride was ejected in the first inning of Sunday’s elimination game against Rhode Island for not sliding during a play at the plate.

Bride tried to score from second on an infield single by Madison Stokes and was waved home by third-base coach Sammy Esposito, but the ball beat him to the plate by several feet.

Bride collided with Rhode Island catcher Chase Livingston, who stood up and got in Bride’s face before the two were separated.

The Gamecocks led the game 22-2 in the 8th. If USC holds on to beat the Rams, Bride will be suspended for Sunday night’s game against UNCW, per NCAA rules.

Bride drove in two runs with a single to center before being ejected. He was replaced in the lineup by senior DC Arendas. The Gamecocks led 3-1 in the 2nd inning.
