More changes coming for Gamecocks’ offensive line

One game in, and the pieces are moving again for South Carolina’s offensive line.

Guard Donell Stanley is out for the foreseeable future with a high ankle sprain. In the Vanderbilt game, that meant tackle D.J. Park sliding down to guard and Blake Camper coming in at tackle.

On Tuesday several linemen ran down a few more changes. Cory Helms, who started the opener at center, has moved out to guard in practice, the spot he was slated to play in the spring. Alan Knott returned from a suspension and a wrist injury and is working at center again.

Camper said he’s been working at first-string right tackle through the week’s early practices but doesn’t know if that will stick. Park returned to his tackle spot.

“I feel like it helps everybody out,” Park said. “I guess it feels good for Coach [Shawn] Elliott to know he can just slide in and have guys do whatever he needs them to do.”

The group replaced three starters in the offseason and has seen its share of shifts throughout. Camper came into the spring as a first-team player but got passed by Park. There was a slight jolt when his number was called, but he came away pleased with how the group adapted.

“D.J. and I played well together,” Camper said. “I liked the way he stepped up a lot. ... His versatility to go down to guard really helped us out.”
