Muschamp projects which freshmen will redshirt

South Carolina’s football team still has around a dozen true freshmen who have yet to see the field.

A good number of them will redshirt, but a few are still taking practice reps and could potentially find their way into games.

“(Defensive lineman) Aaron Thompson still is repping a good bit,” Gamecocks coach Will Muschamp said. “He’s been out a little bit with an injury, but nothing serious. (Offensive lineman) Sadarius Hutcherson is a guy we continue to try and get reps with. (Wide receiver) Korey Banks played Saturday in the A&M game.”

Banks playing means every true freshman wide receiver has seen the field this season.

In addition to Banks, the true freshmen who have played include: QB Brandon McIlwain; WR Bryan Edwards; WR Chavis Dawkins; WR Randrecous Davis; LB T.J. Brunson; DL D.J. Wonnum; DL Keir Thomas; DL Kobe Smith; TE Kiel Pollard; and RB Rico Dowdle.

Muschamp said the staff wants to redshirt both freshman tight ends Evan Hinson and Robert Tucker, along with the other freshman offensive linemen.

Defensive tackle Stephon Taylor will redshirt because of recovery from a shoulder injury, and defensive lineman Griffin Gentry will as well.

Muschamp did not mention quarterback Jake Bentley, cornerback Chris Smith and running back C.J. Freeman by name, but all three are expected to redshirt.

The coach also said the status of tight end Kyle Markway, who missed the first part of the season with an injury, is still up in the air.
