What USC’s Travaris Robinson hopes to see early in camp
South Carolina will need some young players to step up defensively in 2017 in order to have the type of year it is hoping to.
The Gamecocks signed four four-star prospects on defense for this season according to the 247Sports Composite rankings, including Jamyest Williams, Javon Kinlaw, Brad Johnson and MJ Webb.
USC defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson detailed what he hopes to see early from those newcomers, as well as others, when speaking at a charity event Wednesday night in Greenville.
“Getting adapted and getting all of the kinks worked out, learning what to do and how we do things,” Robinson said of what he hopes takes place in the first few days. “We’ve built a different culture there at South Carolina and we expect our older players to teach our younger players how we work and how we go about our business on a day-to-day basis. Just bonding with the players, getting comfortable in their pads, getting comfortable in our defense and getting comfortable in their new environment.”
Robinson also serves as the defensive backs coach at South Carolina.
The Gamecocks return starters Chris Lammons, D.J. Smith and Jamarcus King at DB and also have several other players returning who have contributed on special teams and with small roles defensively.
Robinson knows what he wants to see from his defensive backs early in camp.
“I want to see a brotherhood of guys bonding together and playing for each other, doing it the right way, being disciplined about how we go about our business,” he said.
