Gamecocks get love in polls, power rankings
One week into the season and the South Carolina football team has one of the better wins on its resume thus far.
And folks took notice.
Following South Carolina’s 35-28 win against a well-regarded N.C. State team, USC picked up votes in several polls and power rankings. Most notably, the Gamecocks got eight votes in the Amway Coaches Poll and 44 in the AP Poll.
South Carolina also came in at No. 24 in CBSSports.com’s power rankings. Clay Travis put the Gamecocks at No. 2 in his SEC power rankings and spoke highly of Will Muschamp’s team.
“South Carolina bought the idea that Muschamp is a great coach and in year one at South Carolina Muschamp got a bad Gamecock team to a bowl game,” Travis wrote. “And now in year two he’s won a huge opener as an underdog.
“With the SEC East appearing to be a total mess again, could South Carolina be a surprise team in the division? We’ll see. But for now the Gamecocks have the most surprising win of a young SEC season.”
