Secondary shakeup? Swearinger an option at CB
Senior D.J. Swearinger, who has started eight of the season’s nine games at free safety, may start at cornerback against Arkansas, secondary coach Grady Brown said following Tuesday’s practice.
Swearinger would replace Jimmy Legree in the starting lineup. Legree struggled against Tennessee and also has a minor leg injury, according to cornerback Vic Hampton.
“It’s possible,” Brown said of starting Swearinger. “It just depends on how practice goes, just got to get the best four on the field. That’s what we’re trying to do.”
Swearinger played some cornerback against the Volunteers, Brown said.
If he is moved, South Carolina would have a hole at free safety, and Hampton said the team has worked senior DeVonte Holloman at the position since the Tennessee game. Holloman played safety last year but has started all nine games at the spur position this year.
Kadetrix Marcus, who has missed time recently due to a head injury, is listed as Swearinger’s backup on the team’s depth chart.
Sharrod Golightly, who is listed as Holloman’s backup at spur, is questionable this week due to an undisclosed injury.
Backup cornerback Akeem Auguste remains questionable due to a groin injury. Auguste didn’t play against Tennessee. This week’s cold weather has made Auguste’s injury more painful, Brown said.
