Longtime South Carolina football staffer leaving for new job

After 17 years working with South Carolina football, Robbie Liles will be leaving his post at the end of this month.

Liles has served most recently as Gamecocks coach Will Muschamp’s director of football operations, a position that covers everything from overseeing practice logistics, planning the team’s travel and being in charge of the football team’s budget. Liles served in the position one season after taking over for longtime director of football operations Jamie Speronis, who served under Steve Spurrier throughout Spurrier’s career at South Carolina and then one year under Muschamp.

Liles, who will be taking a job outside of college athletics, has worn many hats for the Gamecocks.

“Robbie is a great Gamecock,” Muschamp said in a statement released by the school. “He helped make my transition seamless and I appreciate all he has done. We will certainly miss Robbie and (wife) Lauren and wish them all the best as they begin a new chapter in their lives.”

A graduate of USC, Liles coached high school football, including at the Hammond School, before joining the Gamecocks in 2001 as a graduate assistant under coach Lou Holtz in the recruiting office. From there, he moved up to director of high school relations, director of recruiting operations, director of player personnel and finally director of football operations.

Liles was the second-longest serving member of the South Carolina football staff, behind only assistant athletics director for video operations Joe Lisle, who has been with the team 21 years.
