D.J. Swearinger excited for new start with Tampa Bay
D.J. Swearinger is happy to have a change of scenery as a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
“I think it’s a plus for me to get a new start, a new city, new coaches, new players around me,” Swearinger told Tampa media on Monday. “Just to start over again is a big key for me and something I’m looking forward to. So far it’s been great.”
The former South Carolina standout was released last week by the Houston Texans.
The safety appeared in 16 games with 12 starts for the Texans last season and finished with 73 tackles, two interceptions and three forced fumbles. He started 10 games as a rookie in 2013 after Houston selected him in the second round out of South Carolina. He had 71 tackles, an interception and forced a fumble in 2013.
Swearinger said he had some indication that his days in Houston were numbered.
“I did hear trade rumors,” he said. “It was what it was. I saw it as a plus for me. If I leave, it is what it is and somebody else will get a great player.”
Swearinger listed among his strengths as the ability to adjust in any defense, make the defensive calls and recognize formations. He could play free or strong safety with the Bucs, he said.
