Spurrier holds spot in top 10 of best coaches list
Steve Spurrier has dropped a few spots but remains in the top 10 of The Sporting News’ annual overall coach rankings.
The South Carolina head coach is now No. 9 in the rankings, down seven spots from No. 2 in last year’s installment of the list. The No. 2 mark was on the heels of three-straight 11-2 seasons by the Gamecocks.
Said the publication in this year’s release: “There's no denying South Carolina’s slip in 2014, and not just in wins and losses. The Gamecocks lost four games by a combined 18 points, and the ability to close out games can’t be all traced to a defense that slipped in 2015. Spurrier’s challenge in 2015: make South Carolina hungry for more again.”
Ohio State’s Urban Meyer is No. 1, a spot held the last year years by Nick Saban of Alabama. Saban is now No. 2 on the list.
Spurrier remains No. 2 among The Sporting News’ SEC coaches list behind Saban.
Spurrier is entering his 11th season as the Gamecocks’ coach. His 84 wins at USC are a school record. USC is 49-17 over the last five seasons, including 7-6 last year.
