SEC coaches recognize pair of South Carolina seniors for all-conference honors

The overall results on the field were far from South Carolina this season, but two Gamecocks still earned recognition from the SEC with their play, as the conference announced its annual awards on Tuesday.

Senior defensive lineman Javon Kinlaw and senior receiver Bryan Edwards were named to the coaches’ All-SEC teams, with Kinlaw on the first team and Edwards on the second.

A defensive tackle out of Charleston, Kinlaw exploded up NFL draft boards with a standout senior year. A midseason AP All-American, he recorded 35 tackles with six sacks, a top-10 mark in the SEC, and two fumble recoveries, a team best, while generating consistent pressure in the middle of the line.

Kinlaw, along with senior defensive end D.J. Wonnum and sophomore cornerback Israel Mukuamu, was also named to the Associated Press all-conference squad, on the second team, on Monday.

Edwards caught 71 passes in 10 games for 816 yards and six touchdowns, breaking the program records for career receptions and yards in the process. Injury forced him to miss the final two games of the year and denied him the opportunity to claim the receiving touchdowns record as well. Still, he finished eighth in the SEC in receiving yards and tied for third in catches. He also led the conference with 7.1 receptions per game and was fourth with 81.6 receiving yards per game.

South Carolina finished off 2019 with a 4-8 record, fourth in the SEC East, and missed a bowl for only the second time since 2005.
