How much South Carolina paid assistant coaches, compared to rest of college football

When it comes to assistant coaches, South Carolina football continues to spend with the best of them, according to the latest database from USA Today tracking assistant coaches’ pay across college football.

At $5,635,000, the total pay for the Gamecocks’ 10-assistant staff in 2019 ranks ranked 14th nationally and eighth in the SEC. And that number will grow in 2020.

Defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson ranked 14th individually in the nation and ninth in the SEC at $1.2 million, 12th among defensive coaches.

Former offensive coordinator Bryan McClendon, who was demoted after a disappointing 2019 season, sat at 24th overall with $1 million, 12th in the SEC. The Gamecocks officially hired former Georgia coordinator and Colorado State head coach Mike Bobo to be the new offensive coordinator on Tuesday. His salary of $1.2 million would tie him with Robinson and make him the third highest-paid offensive coordinator in the country.

South Carolina is one of only five programs in the database with two $1 million assistants, with the others being Clemson, Alabama, Tennessee and Michigan. Clemson is the only program with three assistants paid $1 million or more.

USC’s highest paid non-coordinators were offensive line coach Eric Wolford and former QBs coach Dan Werner, at $700,000 each, putting them in the low-60s nationally. Running backs coach Thomas Brown, who ranked 394th in the database with $300,000, received a raise to $500,000, a number that would put him among the top 175 assistants nationally.

The full list from USA Today has data for more than 1,000 assistant coaches across the country.

USA Today also updated its database of strength and conditioning coach salaries — Jeff Dillman, who was let go by the Gamecocks at the end of this season, was the 12th-highest paid coach in that position in the country, at $425,000.
