Gamecock transfer Jamyest Williams has a new college home
Former South Carolina defensive back Jamyest Williams announced Sunday that he will continue his college career at Georgia State.
He’ll play for head coach Shawn Elliott in Atlanta. Elliott is the former offensive line and interim head coach of the Gamecocks.
“For the rest of my college career I will be attending Georgia State University,” Williams posted Sunday to Twitter and Instagram. “I am more than thankful for coach Elliott and his staff for giving me this opportunity and I look forward to bringing something special to the city.”
Williams came to Columbia as one of the first big recruits under Muschamp. He was the No. 76 player in the country in his class and the top rated player in Will Muschamp’s first full class.
He played four games this season, starting three, before announcing his decision to transfer. That means he can still preserve a redshirt season.
When he made his original decision to leave, he said this about the Gamecocks: “Want to say the the last couple years at South Carolina have been great to me through ups and downs putting team before self,” Williams posted on Twitter. “I gave the Gamecocks nation my all. I wanna thank Coach Muschamp and Coach Trob for all my opportunities and wish them and the players nothing but success in the future. But sometimes change is needed for a person to obtain goals in life for a future that is uncertain therefore have decided to put my name in the College Football Transfer Portal.”
Muschamp has said he wishes Williams nothing but the best in his future.
“He just wants another opportunity, wants a better ... another situation,” USC coach Will Muschamp said of the junior defensive back. “So we support him 100%, loved coaching Jam, and we’re moving forward.”
Williams picked USC ahead of Georgia and Oklahoma as part of Carolina’s 2017 signing class. He is from Loganville, Georgia.
His decision to leave South Carolina and the timing of his departure provided an unusual hit to the Gamecocks and their secondary.
Williams started as a true freshman at nickel, having bright moments and some struggles en route to earning SEC All-Freshman honors. He moved to safety as a sophomore, was again up and down and saw his season end early with a shoulder injury.
This season, he had 16 tackles, fifth on the team, and had some moments where he was picked on in coverage.
