Gamecock kicking great gets another NFL chance, this time with Carolina Panthers
Elliott Fry is going to get another shot in the NFL.
The Carolina Panthers signed the former South Carolina kicker to a reserved-futures contract on Monday. The reserve-futures contract allows teams to start signing players for training camp once the regular season ends. The Panthers (5-11) ended their 2019 season Sunday with a 42-10 loss to the New Orleans Saints.
Fry spent time with the Chicago Bears and Baltimore Ravens in training camp this year. He also kicked for Steve Spurrier with the Orlando Apollos in the Alliance of American Football.
Since being released by the Ravens, Fry worked out with the Los Angeles Chargers, New England Patriots, Indianapolis Colts, New York Jets and Atlanta Falcons.
The St. Louis Battlehawks of the upstart XFL drafted Fry back in September but he never signed.
In four seasons at USC, Fry scored 359 points for the Gamecocks, hitting 75 percent of his field goals. He is the program’s all-time scoring leader.
For Spurrier’s Orlando Apollos, he hit all 14 of his attempts. He was 1-of-2 for the Bears in the preseason.
