What Will Muschamp said about each Gamecock who signed Wednesday
Although many of the headlines Wednesday centered on who did not sign with South Carolina’s football program, the Gamecocks did add four new players.
USC coach Will Muschamp gave a rundown of each of the new players joining his team.
RB ZaQuandre White, 6-foot-1, 200 pounds, Cape Coral, Fla. (North Fort Myers/ Iowa Western C.C.)
“He originally played at North Fort Myers for Earnest Graham, a guy that I know extremely well and have a lot of respect for. He thinks a lot of ZaQuandre as a running back. He originally qualified and signed with Florida State out of high school. He went through the coaching change with when coach (Jimbo) Fisher, went to coach Willie Taggart and just kind of sometimes when you have those transitions, you lose some really good football players. I had actually talked to Jimbo about Zaquandre, really liked his athleticism, him as a young man. Feel like he has a tremendous upside. We’re really excited to have him. (He) went out to Iowa Western. Did a really nice job out there. His parents Zach and Dorothy were great in this process. A guy that’s got the type of measureables you want. I’m really excited to add another size, speed athlete to our football team. Certainly is going to help us here.”
DL Alex Huntley, 6-foot-3, 279 pounds, Blythewood, S.C. (Hammond School)
“I’ve got a unique relationship, obviously, with Alex. Saw him as a freshman in lacrosse at 280 pounds running up and down the field. Obviously with my son, Jackson, being at Hammond. He’s a big athlete, very flexible in his lower body, very powerful in his lower body. I saw him continue to grow and mature there at Hammond. Erik Kimrey, the head coach there, does a fantastic job. To watch this guy grow through the process, Lisa and Harold have been awesome. He has been raised right. Really excited about him joining our program. The guy is the student body president at Hammond. He didn’t enter Hammond until the ninth grade. It says a lot about the type of positive impact he can have on other people and what he’ll do in our locker room.”
WR Ger-Cari Caldwell, 6-foot-4, 195 pounds, Rock Hill, S.C. (Northwestern)
“Had an unbelievable senior season. Page Wofford, who was the offensive coordinator at Daniel, when to Northwestern and installed an offense and they threw the ball an awful lot. They do a nice job throwing it. Ger-Cari ended up with 51 catches and kept kind of coming on to the screen for us in fall. We got more and more excited about him and then you meet him and see the type of young man he is and what he stands for. His mom ... is a fantastic woman. We just really hit it off when we met. Came unofficially and then came back for an official visit. We’re really excited to add another guy from the Rock Hill area to our football team, obviously the hotbed in South Carolina of football.”
LB Gilber Edmond, 6-foot-4, 215 pounds, Fort Pierce, Fla. (Westwood)
“Kind of came on our radar really late, about two and a half or three weeks ago. I wanted to add another linebacker to our class. He’s about 6-foot-3, about 205, but can really play in space, can really run. Jeff George is his head coach. Talking to him, he’s the type of young man we want on our football team. We went down and saw him the last couple of weeks there in January and really felt good about him and were able to know that we had a spot available and wanted to extend that.”
