Five South Carolina football players invited to the NFL Scouting Combine

Five South Carolina football players are headed to the NFL Scouting Combine later this month.

Defensive linemen Javon Kinlaw and D.J. Wonnum, running back Rico Dowdle, receiver Bryan Edwards and punter Joseph Charlton have been invited to the annual event in Indianapolis from Feb. 24 to March 1. In all, 337 prospects were invited for the event, in which they will take part in drills, interviews and get their measurements in front of NFL coaches and personnel.

Kinlaw, Wonnum and Charlton each competed in the Senior Bowl last month, with Kinlaw wowing scouts and analysts with his performance in practices and drills before sitting out the actual game with a minor injury.

Kinlaw is projected as a top-15 pick in most mock drafts.

“It’s so much easier when you’re there watching and studying the same drills and watching these players,” ESPN’s Todd McShay said of Kinlaw. “They always seem to stand out, the guys who rise to the top, if you will. Kinlaw just, it was so obvious. It was so obvious that he was the best player there.”

Edwards was invited to the Senior Bowl but couldn’t attend as he let his knee heal from injury. The Conway High School standout set the USC program records for career catches (234) and receiving yards (3,045) during his senior year.

Dowdle competed in the East-West Shrine All-Star game and rushed for 50 yards. Charlton, who played at AC Flora, averaged 47.1 yards per punt this season.

Wonnum finished his career at South Carolina with 19 sacks, including 4.5 as a senior. Primarily coming off the edge as a rusher, he also had his first career interception in his final season as a Gamecock.

Five Gamecocks were also invited to last year’s combine, with wide receiver Deebo Samuel, offensive lineman Dennis Daley and defensive back Rashad Fenton all getting drafted in April.
