Former four-star Gamecocks recruit set to again switch sides of the ball

M.J. Webb came to South Carolina with a strong recruiting pedigree as a four-star prospect and the No. 300 player in his class in the 247 Sports composite rankings.

He redshirted, converted to offensive line and now he’s going back.

Webb is now listed as a defensive lineman again ahead of practice starting Feb. 26. He was set to enter his fourth year in the program.

Webb played in nine career games, all in 2018 on the defensive line. He made four tackles.

Last spring he was moved to the offensive side of the ball, where coaches praised the 6-foot-3, 290 pounder’s potential.

“The thing is, a lot of times, you take a defensive lineman, you bring him over and they realize that now, athletically, they’re probably ahead of most of the guys on that side of the ball,” Gamecocks offensive line coach Eric Wolford said. “He’s still in a learning curve part of it. But he makes progress every day. I tell him every day, just get better at one thing, and if you keep doing that, in 90 days, you’ll be that much better.”
