Former Gamecock Damiere Byrd landing with AFC powerhouse, report says

Former South Carolina receiver Damiere Byrd is headed to one of AFC’s top teams but it’s unclear who will be throwing him the ball.

Byrd will sign a one-year contract with the New England Patriots, NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo is reporting. Garafolo said Byrd can learn up to $2.5 million. Free agents can officially sign with teams beginning Wednesday.

The announcement comes on the same day as Patriots quarterback Tom Brady announces he won’t re-sign with the team. Multiple reports have Brady heading to Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Byrd played in 11 games last with the Arizona Cardinals and caught a career-high 32 passes for 359 yards and a TD. He spent the previous three seasons with the Carolina Panthers.

Byrd had 44 receptions for 448 yards and three touchdowns in his NFL career.
