Gamecocks lineman puts name in transfer portal

With the sports world shut down, South Carolina just saw a veteran player enter the transfer portal.

Carlay confirmed offensive lineman Summie Carlay put his name into the portal, a sign he intends to continue his college career elsewhere. The Laurens, South Carolina product played three seasons with the Gamecocks and is about to wrap his seventh semester on campus.

Carlay will be a graduate transfer with two years to play.

A member of USC’s 2017 class, Carlay redshirted his first year on campus, didn’t play his second year and was part of the field goal team his third season in 2019.

He was a three-star recruit ranked No. 598 in the 247Sports Composite rankings. He had offers from North Carolina State and Coastal Carolina, and he meshed well with then-offensive line coach Shawn Elliott.

Carlay was a sport and entertainment management major. He made the SEC Fall Academic Honor Roll three times in three seasons.

The move leaves South Carolina with 16 scholarship lineman for next season. He is the first transfer of 2020. Defensive lineman Griffin Gentry left the roster before spring, and Jordon Carty put his name in the portal in December.
