Former Gamecock Elliott Fry picked up by new NFL squad
Former South Carolina kicker Elliott Fry didn’t have to wait long to find a new NFL team.
One day after being cut by the Carolina Panthers in the wake of the NFL draft, he was claimed off waivers by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the team announced Friday night. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero was the first to report the signing.
The Buccaneers had a rookie kicker, Matt Gay, last season and have reportedly been looking for competition to push him.
Fry, the all-time leading scorer in Gamecocks history has had stints with the Panthers, Chicago Bears and Baltimore Ravens, and revitalized his NFL chances with a stint in the AAF playing for Steve Spurrier.
Fry was a four-year started for the Gamecocks from 2013-2016. He put up 359 career points, with 105 as a sophomore.
After that, he didn’t catch on with the NFL. He coaches a little high school ball in Columbia, but eventually reunited with Steve Spurrier in a new league.
He went 14-for-14 in a partial season before the league folded, and has parlayed that into several practice squad spots on NFL rosters.
He has yet to play in an NFL game.
Last year, Gay his 27-of-35 attempts with five from 50-plus yards. He was a fifth-round draft pick out of Utah.
