Tall, in-state QB walking on with Gamecocks to play a different position
Dawson Coleman was a standout in three sports at Beaufort Academy.
Now, Coleman will try to play college football as he plans to walk on with the South Carolina football team.
The 6-foot-6 Coleman was the quarterback for Beaufort Academy football and led the Eagles to SCISA 8-man championship in 2018. He plans to play receiver/tight end for the Gamecocks.
“Two years ago I talked to (Beaufort Academy) coach Mark Clifford on the phone, and he said I had the chance to be a Division I football player. I thought he was crazy,” Coleman said. “Fast forward to now and it turns out he was right. I’m very thankful for all of my coaches throughout my life that have made me the athlete that I am today. I am looking forward to what the future holds for me.”
Clifford called Coleman one of his favorite quarterbacks he has ever coached and thinks his QB can succeed on the Division I level.
Coleman is BA’s leader in all-purpose yards and points. He finished his career with 2,212 passing, 32 touchdown passes while rushing for 1,354 yards and 16 scores.
Coleman also was a 1,000-point scorer in basketball and was part of BA’s 2017 and 2018 SCISA Class A soccer titles.
