Gamecocks great Stephon Gilmore ranked one of the 10 best players in the NFL
South Carolina great Stephon Gilmore was already a Pro Bowler when he made the jump to New England, playing for one of the league’s best teams and likely the sports greatest coach. His game and recognition took of, and it’s landed him in a lofty spot.
On Wednesday, Gilmore was named as the No. 9 player in the whole NFL in the NFL Top 100 list. Compiled from votes from the players, Gilmore is the second Gamecock on the list, joining Jadeveon Clowney, who was No. 41.
Gilmore is coming off back-to-back first-team All-Pro seasons and winning the NFL defensive player of the year award. He picked off six passes and broke up 20, anchoring New England’s secondary.
He’s heading into Year 4 with the Pats, after starting his career with the Buffalo Bills, who picked him 10th overall.
In college he helped the team to its first SEC East title as a sophomore and first 11-win season as a junior. He earned first-team All-SEC honors both years, with All-American honors in his final college season.
A four-star recruit out of Rock Hill, Gilmore won Mr. Football as a dual-threat QB and star defensive back on a powerhouse South Pointe team.
He was No. 22 in last year’s NFL top-100.
