‘Find positive in every situation’: Former Gamecock Jake Bentley reacts to Pac-12 news

Jake Bentley transferred to Utah for a fresh start to finish his college football career.

But now, the former South Carolina quarterback won’t get one, at least not in the fall, as the Pac-12 postponed its fall football season Tuesday because of coronavirus concerns. The Big Ten was the first Power 5 conference to halt its season earlier Tuesday.

Bentley took to Twitter shortly after the announcement and is trying to keep a positive approach.

“Life- 10 % what happens to you. 90% how you respond to it. Not the decision we wanted, but NO reason to be defeated. Find positive in every situation. I’ll still be working to get better everyday,” Bentley posted on Twitter.

Both the Pac-12 and Big Ten say they want to play in the spring, but there are plenty of hurdles before that will take place.

Bentley, who skipped his senior year of high school and enrolled early at South Carolina, was inserted into the starting lineup in his first year with the Gamecocks. He threw for 1,420 yards and led the Gamecocks from 2-4 to a bowl game.

The next year, he had an up and down season, but still posted 2,794 yards, 18 touchdowns, 12 interceptions and led the Gamecocks to a 9-4 year.

Bentley was injured against North Carolina during the 2019 season opener and missed the rest of the season. He announced in December that he was transferring to Utah.

His father, Bobby, remains an assistant coach with the Gamecocks.

“I just felt like I needed a new start,” Bentley recently told The State. “It was nothing against anybody at Carolina. I love (Will) Muschamp and I’m so thankful for all that he’s done for me and my family. But I think for me it was just something that I needed to do.”
