Former Gamecock cut by New York Giants
After five years in Columbia and a short stint in New York, former South Carolina tight end Kyle Markway is looking for a new football home.
The Giants announced Tuesday they’d cut Markway, an undrafted rookie, to make room for several cornerbacks. He was one of several Gamecocks to land with NFL teams after the draft.
Markway had turned down the chance at a sixth year in college to chase his NFL dream. The 6-foot-4, 250 pounder was primarily in a blocking mold, but grew into one of the team’s top pass catchers in his final college campaign.
Markway was a member of Steve Spurrier’s final team in 2015, seeing playing time as a freshman and even starting against his home state school at Missouri. But he had to go through a lot after that.
Injuries cost Markway the 2016 and 2017. As a senior, he spoke about the burning desire to get back and fight through those dark times.
Markway ended up as the fourth tight end in the rotation in 2018, playing in all 13 games and catching three passes. He had a reception to set up a game-winning field goal against Missouri and a touchdown against Florida.
Coming into his senior season, he was supposed to pair with Kiel Pollard, but Pollard had a diagnosis of a career-ending spinal issue, and Evan Hinson transferred out in before the season. That left Markway as the team’s primary tight end, sharing the load with Nick Muse between Muse getting an NCAA waiver and tearing his ACL.
Markway put up 31 catches and 349 yards, both second on the team. He had been granted a sixth year, but chose not to use it.
