New year, another new position for versatile Gamecocks senior
Last season, South Carolina offensive lineman Chandler Farrell made a slight position change, moving over to tight end to help at a position in need of depth.
This season, the senior and Charleston-area product will shift elsewhere, again to help where help is needed.
Gamecocks coach Will Muschamp announced Monday that Farrell will chip in on the defensive line in addition to his work on offense. The one-time center earned a scholarship after his second year on campus.
“Farrell is going to continue to play fullback and tight end, but we’re also going to look at him at defensive tackle a little bit to continue to build depth at that position,” Muschamp said. “(He is) a big guy that is athletic and can move around.”
Farrell (6-foot-3, 278 pounds) played in all 12 games last season and started against Clemson. When Nick Muse was either held out by the NCAA or injured, Farrell was often the team’s No. 2 tight end.
South Carolina holds its first official preseason practice Tuesday.
