Former Gamecock Kyle Markway lands with new NFL team
Kyle Markway has found a new NFL home.
The former South Carolina tight end signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers on Saturday, the team announced. Markway’s agent Brett Tessler posted on Twitter that two other teams also were interested in him.
To make room for Markway on the roster, the Steelers waived tight end Dax Raymond. The Steelers have four tight ends listed on the roster.
Markway, an undrafted free agent, signed with the New York Giants in April but was released on Aug. 12. He worked out for the Steelers earlier this week.
Markway was a member of Steve Spurrier’s final team in 2015, seeing playing time as a freshman and even starting against his home-state school at Missouri. But he had to go through a lot after that.
Injuries cost Markway the 2016 and 2017 campaign.
The 6-foot-4, 250 pound Markway came on last season, stepping up when injuries wrecked the tight end spot for USC. He was a key part of the passing game and a more than solid blocker.
As a senior, Markway posted 31 catches, 349 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He had all of six receptions coming into the year.
