Gamecock great Hayden Hurst scores first TD with Falcons

Touchdown Hayden Hurst.

Hurst scored a wide-open 42-yard touchdown Sunday on a pass from Matt Ryan in Atlanta’s game against the Dallas Cowboys. It’s the tight end’s first score with the Falcons.

How wide open was he?

Dallas won the game 40-39 with a field goal as the game ended. The game was played at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Hurst finished with five catches for 72 yards on the day. He had three catches for 38 yards in the Falcons’ season opener a week ago.

At South Carolina, Hurst set records, posting 616 and 559 yards in his final two seasons. A former minor league baseball player, he found a second career with Gamecocks football under Steve Spurrier and Will Muschamp. He was a first-team All-SEC player in 2017.

He was taken in the first round of the NFL Draft by Baltimore in 2018 and was traded to Atlanta this offseason.

Hurst had 30 catches for 349 yards and a touchdown last season. He was part of an offense that relied on three tight ends around quarterback Lamar Jackson. Hurst battled injuries his first season in the pros, but he did post 163 yards and a touchdown in 12 games.
