Deion Sanders, father of a Gamecock, announces he’ll be head coach at FCS program
South Carolina football coach Will Muschamp often talks about how he likes coaching the sons of other coaches. He’ll now have the son of another college head coach on his roster.
Pro Football Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, the father of Gamecocks defensive back Shilo Sanders, announced he’s taking over as head coach at Jackson State on his Barstool podcast according to multiple reports. Since FCS football for the most part isn’t happening this fall, Deion Sanders will coach out the season at Trinity Christian High, where he coaches his son Shedeur, a four-star senior.
Deion Sanders was a star at Florida State in college and went on to one of the more decorated careers in NFL history, playing defensive back for the Atlanta Falcons, San Francisco 49ers and Dallas Cowboys.
His son is coming into his second season and got a little buzz through the course of the preseason. After playing four games last season with one tackle, he’s been in the mix at safety.
As recently as a few weeks ago, he was the fifth defensive back in when the team went to its nickel defense. That was before oft-injured safety Jaylin Dickerson returned from a possible hamstring issue, but still could speak to progress from the 6-foot, 195-pound Shilo Sanders.
He was a three-star recruit in South Carolina’ 2019 class.
Jackson State won a conference title as recently as 2007, but struggled after Rick Comegy left for Mississippi Valley State following the 2013 season.
The Gamecocks open their season Saturday at 7:30 in Williams-Brice Stadium against Tennessee.
