Mike Bobo’s South Carolina offense opens with quick touchdown drive vs. Tennessee
The Mike Bobo era at South Carolina is off to a rip-roaring start.
The Gamecocks’ new offensive coordinator orchestrated a ruthlessly efficient drive in the team’s first possession of the 2020 season against Tennessee, capped by a three-yard touchdown run from sophomore Kevin Harris.
It’s USC’s first touchdown since Nov. 9, 2019 — the Gamecocks failed to find the end zone in their final two games last year.
And Bobo’s unit looked good doing it. Harris got the first SEC touchdown of his career and picked up 20 yards on five carries, while new starting quarterback Collin Hill connected on four of six passing attempts. Three of those passes went to senior receiver Shi Smith, who took a pair for 20 yards each.
By the end of the drive, Shi Smith had more yards (46) than he had in all but three games last season. It’s also the first time South Carolina has scored a touchdown on its first drive of the game since the Tennessee game last season, when Smith took his first reception 75 yards for a score.
Since that opening drive, however, the Gamecocks have labored on the offensive side of the ball, not scoring again and putting up 50 combined yards on six drives. At halftime, USC trailed 14-7.
