Gamecock recruits in action: Stockton accounts for seven touchdowns in shootout win
The defense for Rabun County football had a tough go of it early, Friday night, but five-star South Carolina football commit Gunner Stockton was there to help.
The 2022 quarterback in the Gamecocks class scored seven touchdowns, five in the first half, to carry his offense in a back and forth game. The Wildcats ultimately prevailed 48-34.
Stockton was 17-of-25 passing for 252 yards and three touchdowns. He also carried it 20 times for 182 yards and four scores.
Stockton ran for a pair of scores early and hit Adriel Clark on three scoring passes before halftime.
After coming up short on a fourth down to start the second half, but followed with another rushing TD after the defense forced a missed field goal. That gave the Wildcats a 42-27 lead.
The junior ran for his final score with less than five minutes left, again extending the lead after the Devils cut the lead to one score again.
Stockton had one TD run and another 80-plus yard scamper called back on holds.
Rabun Country (3-1) is off next week.
Other Gamecocks commits:
▪ Colten Gauthier, South Carolina’s 2021 QB, led his team to a 17-13 win against Mount Pisgah Christian. Gauthier threw an early touchdown pass on a screen and then the defense took over, shutting out the Patriots until into the third quarter.
The second half had a bit more action as the lead was cut to 10-7, Gauthier delivered a 50-yard deep strike over the middle to extend it back and then Mount Pisgah scored again to get within four.
Gauthier was 21-of-35 for 235 yards and two touchdowns.
Mount Pisgah had a go-ahead TD in the waning moments called back on a hold.
▪ South Pointe wide receiver O’Mega Blake tossed two touchdown passes and ran for another while playing QB in the 31-14 win over Catawba Ridge.
Blake was 8-of-16 passing for 118 yards and also rushed for 81 yards.
▪ Alabama wide receiver Sam Reynolds scored on a 1-yard touchdown run in a 31-0 win for his No. 1-ranked Thompson squad against Mountain Brook.
▪ Marion defensive end TJ Sanders had 11 tackles and four sacks in the season-opening win over Andrews. Sanders also had a TD run.
▪ Jayden Johnson helped his Cedartown (Ga.) to a 24-0 win over New Manchester. Johnson came into the game with 5 catches for 81 yards, a TD on offense and six tackles on defense.
▪ Running back Caleb McDowell had a 6-yard TD run in Lee County (Ga.) 38-13 loss to Lowndes.
▪ WR Simeon Price had four catches for 70 yards in West Florida Tech’s 24-20 loss to Escambia on Saturday. He also had a 70-yard TD catch called back because of a penalty.
