Muschamp updates status of pair of hobbled Gamecocks starters
South Carolina’s football team is about to try to corral a Florida offense that put up 56 points and 642 yards in its opener.
And two of the Gamecocks’ key defensive players are working through injuries.
Linebacker Sherrod Greene and corner Israel Mukuamu both missed most of the second half of Saturday’s 31-27 loss to Tennessee with a hip and groin issue, respectively. Their coach, Will Muschamp, gave an opaque update on their injuries Sunday night.
“Israel is day-to-day,” Muchamp said. “Sherrod is day-to-day with a hip. I’ll know more Tuesday but I don’t think either one are serious.”
If either misses the game, it forces the Gamecocks to do some shuffling.
Muschamp addressed his secondary, an area where the staff is usually playing mix-and-match anyway. Shilo Sanders, Jaylin Dickerson and Cam Smith all got work as rotation defensive backs against the Vols.
Smith is Mukuamu’s backup and had some freshman moments in the loss.
Greene’s presence alleviates a depth concern, as several issues have robbed that group of some pieces. Without him, Damani Staley steps in next to Ernest Jones, and at the moment the only reserves behind those three are freshman Mohamed Kaba and former walk-on Spencer Eason-Riddle, who is back after a torn ACL.
Muschamp also updated the situations for a few longer-term injuries.
▪ Dime/linebacker Jahmar Brown will practice again this week after being held out as a game-time decision this weekend. He has been coming back from a knee issue.
▪ Linebacker Rosendo Louis is still coming back from quad surgery and likely won’t be available until mid-October.
▪ Defensive tackle Alex Huntley should be back after a rolled ankle.
▪ Wide receiver Chad Terrell is a little behind in his torn ACL rehab. He was supposed to be back around the start of the season.
