South Carolina’s Will Muschamp addresses leaked video of him cursing
Before South Carolina football could open its 2020 season this past weekend, coach Will Muschamp had to take a call from his mother — and she wasn’t happy.
A few hours before kickoff against Tennessee, a video circulated on social media of Muschamp telling Gamecock fans to get out their seats at Williams-Brice Stadium with some, ahem, colorful language.
A USC spokesman later confirmed the authenticity of the video, saying it was an outtake from two years ago that was never meant to be made public. After the Gamecocks lost to the Vols in narrow fashion Saturday, Muschamp was focused on the game in his news conference and didn’t speak about the video. On Tuesday, he addressed it.
“It was an outtake between me and (director of creative media) Justin King, OK? And if I offended anybody, I apologize, all right? It was between me and another guy,” Muschamp said. “Again, I apologize if I offended anybody. It was between two people. It was never meant to be public. It was between two people, and somebody obviously thought they were going to be cute and put it out there.”
In terms of reaction, the majority of the response on social media to the profanity seemed to be either apathetic, amused or downright appreciative of Muschamp’s enthusiasm. But at least one person had to give him a hard time — his mother, Sally.
“My mom had to call me before the game and get on me about it. So, you know, I’m 49 years old,” Muschamp said Tuesday.
Muschamp said he did not know who was responsible for leaking the video to social media, but added that he was “looking forward to finding out.” When asked how he would feel if it was someone on his staff, he kept his answer short.
“I probably couldn’t say at this press conference. I don’t want to use that language again,” Muschamp said.
