Wide receiver Jalen Christian doesn’t remind South Carolina coaches of any one former Gamecock. He’s similar to three USC standouts.

“Bruce Ellington, Ace Sanders and Damiere Byrd,” he said, “just because of their height and how much heart they play with. It’s not all about the size. They were just great players. They fit perfectly in Steve Spurrier’s offense.”

Christian, from Damascus, Md., is hoping to fit in somewhere as a true freshman. The most likely landing spot for the 5-foot-9 receiver is the slot position on offense, a role that Pharoh Cooper excelled in last season.

A return role on special teams is also possible for Christian.

“All the awards I won in Maryland were from defensive back,” he said. “A lot people would think I’m going to South Carolina for defensive back, but I’m going for slot. I can play both sides of the ball. I’m ready to make a big impact this season.”

THREE QUOTES

▪  “The coaches were honest with me. When I visited, I realized how much it reminded me of my hometown. The coaches played a big factor into my commitment.”

▪  “South Carolina should be top 10 every year. We have the talent. We should be winning championships. We’re going to definitely be better. I feel like we’re going to win championships soon.”

▪  “He’s a very cool guy,” Christian said of Steve Spurrier. “He’s a legend. It’s an honor to play for a legend.”

COACH’S TAKE

Wide receivers coach Steve Spurrier Jr.: “Great player. Diverse player. I think he’s an excellent athlete who can do a lot of things, excited to get him up here and get him in the slot and see what he can do.”

ANALYSIS

Adam Friedman, Rivals: “He’s a superb athlete. He’s got great speed and really good vision. Jalen should be able to impact on special teams earlier than he will on offense. But he’s a good character kid that you’re not going to have to worry about off the field.”
