South Carolina football injury, status report

  • Offensive lineman Dylan Wonnum is not likely to return this season as he nurses a back injury, coach Shane Beamer said Saturday before the Florida game. The three-year starter hasn’t played since the Tennessee game on Oct. 9.
  • Quarterback Zeb Noland is officially QB2 behind Jason Brown, but Beamer said Noland continues to progress in practice after undergoing a minor knee surgery during the bye week.
  • Wide receiver Jalen Brooks is off the Gamecocks’ depth chart this week as he continues to tend to a personal matter. Brooks’ timetable to return remains unknown, and he hasn’t played since South Carolina’s game at Tennessee on Oct. 9.

Gamecocks vs Missouri Tigers: What to watch for

National pundits originally expected South Carolina to win three or four games in Shane Beamer’s first season as head coach. This week, the Gamecocks could clinch a bowl berth in their 10th game.

South Carolina’s offense was at its sharpest in its 40-17 rout of Florida last weekend, and the Gamecocks look to prove that last week’s season-best offensive performance (459 total yards, 284 rushing) can be sustained throughout their last three games of 2021.

The Gamecocks face a Missouri defense ranked last in the SEC in run defense, though the unit improved against Georgia last week. The Tigers allowed the Bulldogs just 168 yards, but their opponents have averaged 271 run yards this season.

Missouri was without starting quarterback Connor Bazelak last week and opted to play both backups against Georgia. Head coach Eliah Drinkwitz had yet to name a starting quarterback as of Thursday, though Bazelak is not yet at full health, per Drinkwitz.

The Tigers feature Tyler Badie, a 1,000-yard rusher through 2021 who’s ranked top of the SEC and 10th in the country. Badie will pose a challenge to South Carolina’s improved run defense, which allowed just 82 yards last week to a Florida rushing attack that averages over 200 yards per game.

South Carolina players to watch

1. Quarterback Jason Brown became the Gamecocks’ third starting quarterback of 2021 when he led South Carolina’s offensive charge against Florida last Saturday. The transfer from FCS St. Francis (Pennsylvania) completed 14-of-24 passes for 175 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions against the Gators and will look to spearhead another strong effort at Missouri.

2. Running back ZaQuandre White totaled the most carries of his career against Florida (13) and broke free for a 54-yard run, flashing his explosive ability. White and Kevin Harris both rushed for over 100 yards in the South Carolina run game’s breakout performance against Florida, and they are both likely to have a field day with Missouri’s dismal rush defense allowing 271 yards per game.

3. Placekicker Parker White needs just 11 points to surpass Elliott Fry’s South Carolina record of 359 and become the program’s all-time leading scorer. He scored a career-best 16 points in last week’s win over Florida and was named SEC Co-Special Teams Player of the Week after being left off the semifinalist list for the Lou Groza Award, given to the nation’s top kicker.

Three Mizzou football players to watch

1. Wide receiver Tauskie Dove has explosive play potential and has hauled in at least one reception of 10 yards or more in every Missouri game this season. He has 30 catches for 454 yards this year and averages 15.1 yards per reception, making the 6-foot-2 wideout a formidable matchup for the Gamecocks’ secondary.

2. Defensive back Jaylon Carlies is a turnover machine for the Tigers, coming up with four interceptions and a forced fumble this season. The 6-3 sophomore safety is tied for third in the country in total interceptions (second in the SEC behind South Carolina’s Jaylan Foster) and was one of the lone bright spots in Missouri’s most recent loss at Georgia, intercepting Bulldog quarterback J.T. Daniels and coming up with a team-leading 10 tackles in Athens.

3. Running back Tyler Badie was stifled in Missouri’s last game against Georgia, but the senior will be looking to replicate the performances he had against Central Michigan (203 yards on 25 carries), North Texas (209 yards on 17 carries) and Vanderbilt (254 yards on 31 carries). Badie has already eclipsed 1,000 yards rushing in 2021 and adds another 315 yards on 45 receptions. He’s the 10th most productive rusher in the country and ranks first in the SEC.
