South Carolina loses wide receiver to transfer portal
South Carolina sophomore receiver Ger-Cari Caldwell is in the transfer portal, The State confirmed Tuesday.
He starred at Northwestern High School in Rock Hill and signed with the Gamecocks as part of the 2020 recruiting class. He played in six games in 2020 and caught one pass.
He played in one games in 2021 — the season-opening win over Eastern Illinois — and hasn’t seen the field since.
Caldwell becomes the first Gamecock to announce plans to leave the program since the regular season ended Saturday.
After a quiet junior season in high school, Caldwell blossomed as a senior and was thought of as an under-the radar prospect that USC moved in with late in the recruiting process.
The 6-foot-4, 195-pound receiver notched 51 catches for 744 yards and six touchdowns in his senior football season at Northwestern. He also was selected to play in the Shrine Bowl. He recorded just one reception for five yards in his brief Gamecocks career.
Caldwell picked USC over Baylor, Tennessee, Wake Forest and East Carolina, where he was committed to prior to the season.
Caldwell was one of three receivers signed to the Class of 2020 and second to transfer. Michael Wyman left the program last year and Rico Powers had two catches this season.
South Carolina has largely kept its roster in tact despite the transition from Will Muschamp to Shane Beamer last year. The Gamecocks had lost only 10 players since Beamer was hired in early December 2020 prior to Caldwell’s departure on Tuesday.
