Spencer Rattler to South Carolina! The reaction to QB transfer news is pouring in
High-profile Oklahoma transfer quarterback Spencer Rattler is heading to Columbia.
Rattler, who was among preseason favorites for this year’s Heisman Trophy before his career with the Sooners tilted, announced Monday night he’ll be joining Shane Beamer’s South Carolina football program.
Rattler will be joined by fellow former Oklahoma tight end Austin Stogner, a former four-star who finished his sophomore season in 2020 as a second-team All-Big 12 selection.
Twitter exploded with the late breaking news, with national pundits, USC coaches, current and former Gamecocks sharing their thoughts about Rattler’s decision.
“So South Carolina could go from having to start a GA at QB in 2021 to starting last summer’s preseason Heisman favorite in 2022,” The Athletic’s Stewart Mandel tweeted.
“After a strong debut under Shane Beamer, South Carolina football just got a lot more interesting,” Yahoo Sports national reporter Pete Thamel tweeted.
“We talked about this on the show this morning….. If there was a time to disrupt the power balance in the state of South Carolina, the time is now. Dunk on em, @CoachSBeamer,” SEC Network host Peter Burns tweeted.
“Oh we lit lit,” former South Carolina running back Marcus Lattimore tweeted in reply to Rattler’s announcement.
“Haven’t had this much fun on Twitter since our last rain delay. Go Cocks!!” former Gamecock baseball player and current Kansas City Royal Whit Merrifield tweeted.
“If this is a program on “life support” I can wait to be dead. #SpursUp,” South Carolina director of player personnel Taylor Edwards tweeted.
About an hour before the news of Rattler and Stogner’s commitments, tight end Jaheim Bell tweeted a gif of Alfonso Ribeiro dancing with a chicken emoji.
“Welp that was unexpected,” South Carolina running back MarShawn Lloyd tweeted with a laughing face emoji.
Beamer teased the news just before they announced, tweeting “#WelcomeHome” with the hang 10 emoji three times.
“Yes, that’s 3 of them #ThatsFourTODAY #WhosNext ?” Beamer tweeted.
A former five-star recruit, Rattler completed 214 of 317 passes for 3,031 yards, 28 touchdowns against seven interceptions as a freshman.
Rattler’s production was stifled in his sophomore season as Caleb Williams took over under center in Norman. Rattler finished 2021 completing 74.9% of his passes for 1,483 yards and 11 touchdowns before announcing his transfer from Oklahoma.
Stogner brought in 26 catches for 422 yards and three touchdowns in just eight games as a sophomore in 2020. Last season, he recorded 14 receptions for 166 yards and three touchdowns with Oklahoma.
