5 to know about new Gamecock, transfer tight end Austin Stogner
Former University of Oklahoma tight end Austin Stogner announced Monday night that he would be transferring to play for Shane Beamer and South Carolina.
Here are five things to know about the talented tight end, who will be a senior in 2022 and have an extra year because of the NCAA’s pandemic relief if he chooses.
Shane Beamer coached him at Oklahoma
Beamer coached Stogner for two seasons when he was at Oklahoma before leaving to take the Gamecocks job. Beamer was the tight ends coach for the Sooners from 2018-20. Stogner enrolled at the school in 2019 and played 14 games as a freshman.
All-conference selection with the Sooners
During his sophomore year, Stogner was a second-team All-Big 12 selection and was third on the team with 26 catches and 422 yards and three touchdowns.
A top tight end recruit out of high school
Stogner was a four-star recruit coming out of Prestonwood Christian School in Plano, Texas. He was ranked the No. 2 tight end by 247Sports and No. 3 by ESPN.
Stogner was invited to The Opening national recruiting event and was an All-American Bowl selection. He picked Oklahoma over Alabama, Michigan, Texas A&M and others.
According to OU Daily, Stogner and his family visited 17 schools during the spring of his sophomore year.
Stogner comes from an athletic family
Austin Stogner wasn’t the only one in his family to play college football. His father, Brad Stogner, played at Baylor in the early 1990s. Austin’s cousin, Dalton, walked on and played receiver at North Carolina from 2012-15.
Stogner’s growth spurt
Stogner’s recruiting took off just before his freshman year at Prestonwood Christian. He grew seven inches to his 6-foot-6 frame.
Stogner also played basketball in high school but enrolled early during his senior year.
